cruelty and abandonment of animals

On Cruelty

aren't this animals cute? dont they just melt your heart with their innocent looks?

blind mini pincher found at joo chiat with bad skin problem

In 2007, a dog found with its paw stuck to the drain cover. Apparently there were maggots on his paw.

a pregnant cat with a clean slit at its stomach

cat with wires around its neck, suffocates

what about this photos? how do these make you feel? who will be so inhumane enough to abuse and kill the animals? don't animals have a right to live as well? there is justice to be done out there. We must respect animals even though we're not animal-lovers. Its unjust to kill them just because they are of lower intellect than us. Personally, i feel that if this people are evil enough to carry out such acts on animals, they are capable of doing it to humans as well. This kind of people are dangerous to our community and must be stopped at once.

Further cases of abuse:
  • Lianhe Wanbao had an article about the killing of stray cats on 19th January of 1996. The killer apparently use a number of ways such as drowning the kittens in pails of water and smashing their heads against the wall till the felines vomit blood.
  • SPCA received a call on 19th october 1999 that newborn puppies had been buried alive the day before on a fish farm at Lim Chu Kang Lane. Twenty-one puppies were found.
Tying up and caging of domestic animals for long periods of time is also considered abuse as the animal can suffer from heatstroke. It can also be something like this:

the poor kittens don't even have space! Neglect is a 2nd form of abuse as the animals can suffer from psychological damage. Read this for more information (click).

SPCA investigates up to 70-80 complaints of alleged animal abuse each month. Under the Animals and Birds Act, a person found guilty of animal abuse can be imprisoned up to one year or fined up to $10,000 or both.

If you are a witness of animal abuse, please call SPCA at 6287 5355 or contact the police. Since animals cannot communicate to us verbally, it is our job to voice up for them. Who else will if not you?

On Abandonment

On average, SPCA takes in 700 animals per month. A shocking number if you were to realize that the maximum capacity of animals for the shelter is 170. What happens to the other animals you ask? Well, they are "put to sleep". The animals have to undergo selection criteria depending on their age, health, temperament, and space. Those who do not meet the selection criteria meets doctor death. A sad fate. Only 85 animals get adopted per month too.

Most people handover their animals to SPCA due to many reasons, most of them though are quite irrational. "No time, no money" "No maid" "HDB not approved". I mean, come on, you dont say to your kids that "honey, i don't have time to take care of you. Should i send you to the nearest orphanage?". Having a pet is a LIFE-TIME COMMITMENT. Do not buy a pet on impulse. Consider whether you have enough time and money to take care of it. ONLY SURRENDER YOUR ANIMALS TO SPCA AS A LAST RESORT.

Worse still, what if the pets are released into the outdoors (a sure death sentence for domestic animals like rabbits and small dogs such as chihuahuas). They will have to face many challenges just to stay alive. What if they're abused too?

If one of your family members suffer from asthma and is considering on surrendering your animal, find it a good home. Better still, carry out a physical examination to determine the specific allergen(s) which trigger the asthma attack. This might reduce incidences of asthma attack and your pet can still be kept.
If your animal is irritating you with its yowling and scratching the door at night, it might be having sexual frustrations. Sterilize your pet at the nearest vet or SPCA. Sterilizing will help to eliminate the chances of your pet having testicular and ovarian tumors. On the other hand, you will never face the fact that one day your pet has given birth to a litter.

Cruelty to animals is very serious. We must play our part to make sure that our society stays safe.

  4. to Anonymous: Cats are more hardy than dogs when it comes to requiring affection and care 24/7. They enjoy their independence and know when they want more affection and attentioon. However, if you're planning to get kittens or young kitties, then they will demand more of your time and care. You will have to ensure that they don't get into fights with strays and they have their regular check-ups. Stop by the SPCA and speak with the shelter managers/ staff to find out more.

  6. Hey Hidayah, Kar Mun here. I think you've done a great job in updating this blog for all to view. :D Personally I've paid a trip to SPCA recently and I'm shocked to see the number of abandoned animals on the rise, especially during recessionary times like these.

I hope you can update this blog regularly. It's a good read. :D
